This painting was done as commentary on modern taxonomy. As more is understood about the origin of birds, and other dinosaurs as well, a backlash has risen over the "new" dinosaurs. The truth of the matter is, that if dinosaurs such as Velociraptor, Troodon, and Microraptor were still alive today, they would have looked so similar to birds that we would have classified them as such without a second thought.

Ratites such as emus, ostriches and cassowaries still have full fingers and hand claws. Even baby hoatzin use their hands and claws to climb like their ancestors. The more we learn about dinosaurs, the more real they become, and notions of savage, primal movie monsters fades away.
